In an attempt to profit off of the rapidly growing “neurodiversity aisle,” Mattel today announced the release of Autism Ken™, the toy industry’s most authentic representation of autism yet.
Customers quickly began making comparisons to the nearly-identical 2012 Train Conductor Ken™. However, Mattel CEO John Mattel was quick to respond: “This new Ken is completely different! His packaging comes with a bright, rainbow-colored diversity-themed sticker that clearly states his name, and the fact that he just happens to be interested in trains!”
The doll comes with the same removable conductor hat and suit, and the exact same blank thousand-yard stare that has now been rebranded as “neurodivergent eye contact avoidance.”
Autism Ken™ is already sold out online. Parents report their children are thrilled. “He’s perfect,” said one mom. “He doesn’t talk much and fixates on the same three routes. Just like real life.”
Mattel promises more repackaged diversity coming soon: Anxiety Barbie™ (same as Yoga Barbie™, now with “breathe” sticker) and ADHD Skipper™ (formerly Rollerblade Skipper™ with worse grades).
